DEARHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL

Dearham Primary school is situated in the West Coast of Cumbria. West Cumbria is geographically isolated and transport links are few.
Dearham Primary School is a wonderful place to be.  It has a real family atmosphere and ethos.  Pupils are well behaved, courteous, eager to learn and caring. Children love learning and staff love teaching – these factors make a highly effective school where children achieve very well.
Dearham Primary School became an Academy in November 2011. It is situated in a former mining village, two and a half miles from Maryport in West Cumbria.  It was built in 1875 but has been extended several times and serves the village of Dearham where there is a mixture of local authority, housing association and privately owned homes.  The catchment characteristics are changing as Dearham attracts more and more pupils many from out of catchment. Mobility of pupils is increasing over time.
The most recent data shows that the school is smaller than the National average size.  The school has an increasing number of pupils eligible for free school meals which has dramatically increased recently (and is not reflected on RAISE online and has been questioned with raise  -  it is currently 18% ). The % of pupils with SEN is above the National and  is increasing rapidly .
The school has recently grown in numbers with pupils entering the school in different year groups rather than the usual points of entry.
Although most pupils remain from with the catchment area 3.3% of our pupils come from Ewanrigg ward which falls within the top 50% in the Index of Deprivation, 4.3% come from Ellenborough and 1.4% Netherhall, which fall within the top 20% in the Index of Deprivation.    Dearham itself has increasing levels of deprivation.
Culturally, there are few opportunities for pupils and this opportunity would help with this.
